New spatial logics of the regional air transport sector in the state of São Paulo

Abstract

At first sight, it would seem that the importance of the regional air transport sector has reduced when compared to the national and international air transport sector. However, on closer examination, we observe that this segment facilitates territorial integration, cooperates with the configuration of spatial interactions and generates a multiplying effect of fluidity. This sector contributes to a network of economic relations in the richest state of Brazil, given the role of São Paulo in terms of national economic dynamics. In this article we discuss the regional air transport sector in the state of São Paulo, considering the air traffic between the interior of the state, the capital and the metropolitan region. Thus, the new spatial logics are defined according to the new role of the cities and their airports in the interior of the state, with the essential element of territorial reorganization produced by urban, industrial and regional restructuration. In this manner, we aim to associate this productive disjunction with a capital-interior contiguity towards spatial complementarity brought about by the regional air transport sector.
