Interaction, construction of social space and sexuality in Mexico City’s Subway

Abstract

This paper studies social interactions that occurred in the Metro of Mexico City. It is the result of a six-month fieldwork and it is based on the analytical perspective of Erving Gorffman's micro-sociology and Guy Di Meo's social geography. It proposes an observation focused on the body and its gestures as means of communication, as well as forms of use and transformation of space. In the case of Mexico City’s subway, these expressions are oriented by sexuality and gender roles. Although the subway is generally perceived as a public space, as per the interactions established by the passengers during their journeys it can be seen as a more complex, flexible and ambiguous space, where it is possible to establish relationships traditionally definied as private.
