The dynamics of regional disparities and formal employment in Bahia: an analysis of the period 2004-2014

Abstract

The unequal nature of the spatial distribution of economic activities, which requires workers that are capable of meeting their demands on different scales of specialization, is reflected in the interregional economic dynamism. Nevertheless, such productive inequalities are reflected on the distribution of income among the resident population in these areas. The present paper, within such a context, has sought to understand the dynamics of the productive and income disparities amongst the microregions of the state of Bahia, and that decompose the growth of regional employment from the years 2004 to 2014, using, respectively, the Williamson coefficient of variation and shift-share analysis. The results demonstarted that there was a reduction in the interregional inequality of income in the state of Bahia, as well as a reallocation of formal employment generated by the productive activities within its microregions.
