POSTHARVEST QUALITY LOST IN CV. GALA APPLES DURING REFRIGERATED AIR STORAGE

The experiment was conducted with the objective to evaluate quality lost of Gala apples during refrigerated air storage. Three sizes of apples: 100 apples/40Lbs box, 130 apples/box, and 200 apples/box were sampled every two weeks during 90 days of storage in the first year, 144 days in the second year, and 211 days in the third year. Samples of 20 to 30 apples were evaluated for weight lost, fruit firmness, total soluble solids (TSS) and titratable acidity. The best correlations with the storage period were obtained with fruit firmness and titratable acidity. The smallest apple sizes had the highest indices of quality lost with the exception for fruit firmness.
