Quality of life assessment following heart surgery, during phase I rehabilitation, through MOS SF-36 questionnaire

Background: The Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36 (MOS-36 SF-36) quality-of-life questionnaire enables monitoring of patients' health conditions before and after treatment, and is sensitive to clinical improvement. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of life among patients who had undergone myocardial revascularization surgery and were participating in a rehabilitation program, by applying the MOS SF-36 questionnaire. Method: The study included 24 individuals (15 males and 9 females) in the age range 23 to 77 years (mean age: 58 ± 6 years) who had undergone myocardial revascularization surgery and were now in a stable clinical condition and participating in a phase I cardiac rehabilitation program. The questionnaire was applied on three different occasions: before surgery, on the fifth postoperative day and two months after surgery. The Wilcoxon test for paired samples was used in the statistical analysis. Results: Decreases were observed in the following parameters following the surgery: physical functioning (p = 0.000), limitations due to physical disorders (p = 0.002), vitality (p= 0.003) and pain (p= 0.000), with significant recuperation two months later (p = 0.008, p = 0.000, p = 0.000 and p = 0.000, respectively). Conclusion: This study suggests that the MOS SF-36 questionnaire enables assessment of the benefits from the phase I cardiac rehabilitation program, which promoted self-confidence and return to daily activities.
