Gustavo Corção: guardian of the hardline

The aim of this paper is to analyze the chronicles of Gustavo Corção in the Brazilian press (Diário de Notícias and O Globo) between 1964 and 1968. The hypothesis presented is that Gustavo Corção was one of the creators in the Brazilian public sphere of the legitimation of the anti-democratic foundations of the military regime's 'democracy.' Moreover, the definition of 'hardline' was related to the enemies chosen, who were almost always Catholic. We can thus understand aspects related to both the participation of lay persons and the relationship established between the Brazilian state and Catholic Church in the period. The article tries to demonstrate that more attention is needed to recover the sense of democracy mobilized by social groups in that period, not to justify their actions but rather to understand and contextualize them.
