Gender Games, Maternalism and Politics: “A Working Woman” in the Porto Alegre City Council (1948-1951)

ABSTRACT

After the fall of the Estado Novo, Brazil went through a process of re-democratization and re-establishment of its legislative houses. At the end of 1947, several capitals of the country held elections for their Municipal Chambers, an election that would lead some women to exercise the position of councilors for the first time. In Porto Alegre, the communist worker Julieta Battistioli ended the dispute as the first substitute for her colleague Elóy Martins, but throughout the legislature she took the stand several times, leading intense debates with the other councilors. The aim of this article is to analyze some of the spaces where Julieta transited and especially these clashes, identifying strategies and resignifications adopted by Julieta in order to legitimize herself in a masculine environment.
