Intuitive teaching in illustrated schoolbooks: notes for *thinking about some lessons taught in the last quarter of the 19th century

Abstract

In the last quarter of the 19th century, the Brazilian Empire was pressured by political, economic, and social issues, which shook its consolidated structures. In this panorama, among certain initiatives undertaken to maintain the support of the monarchical regime, the Reform of Public Instruction (1879) stands out. Among other measures, this educational legislation prescribed intuitive teaching in the curriculum of primary education and Normal Schools in the municipality of Corte. Thus, three illustrated didactic works, circulating in the period, guided by this method, were examined, seeking to indicate some possible relations and convergences between them with the official methodological prescription. It was intended, therefore, to know some visions of the world, education, school, and childhood of that present.
