What clothes should I wear to go to the samba you invited me to?: A study on adequacy, stylistic variation, and linguistic education

Abstract

This paper discusses the association of linguistic adequacy and style in Sociolinguistics, focusing on its relevance to Portuguese language teaching, specifically regarding Brazilian Portuguese verbal agreement. From the review of specific sociolinguistic literature, this work first reflects upon the issue of stylistic variation. Then, it presents a section analysis dedicated to the topic of verbal agreement based on two Portuguese high school textbooks. Finally, the work defends that linguistic adequacy is more widely forged in stylistic practice, meriting further observation.
