ABSTRACT
This article analyses the recent book by Mario Vargas Llosa, Medio siglo con Borges (2020), in the light of contemporary debates on the removal or preservation of controversial monuments. Vargas Llosa and Borges are read as literary monuments in a meditation on literary canons and the currency of criticism. Among others, the ideas of Walter Benjamin, Beatriz Sarlo and Lélia Gonzalez are incorporated in the analysis.
