Abstract
José Anselmo Correia [Corrêa] Henriques (1777, Ribeira Brava-1832 Lisboa) is a forgotten Portuguese writer who worked as a diplomat in European cities, especially in Hamburg and at the Portuguese court in Rio de Janeiro. In addition to some poems, a drama, translations and erotic poetry, he wrote several epics. We present one of these works, the Padeira de Aljubarrota (Hamburg: Nestler, 1806, published also in the Obras poeticas, Vol. 1, Hamburg: Nestler, 1819) and interpret this heroic-comic epic, based on the model of Voltaire's Pucelle, as an attempt to renew the traditional genre at the beginning of the 19th century.
