Incidence, type and nature of injuries on athletes of Rugby São José at the 2014 season

INTRODUCTION:

Rugby will be included back as an Olympic sport in the Olympics Rio 2016 and athletes show a high incidence of injuries due to the sports' characteristics.

OBJECTIVE:

To report the incidence, location, nature, treatment of injuries and the time of withdrawal from sports due to injuries of Rugby São Jose athletes in the 2014 Season.

METHODS:

We conducted a cross-sectional study with 62 rugby athletes identifying the main risk factors for injuries in the 2014 season, the existence of previous injuries, age, time practicing rugby, high BMI, playing position, hours of weekly training and gym training habits.

RESULTS:

The main injuries found were in lower limbs joints.

CONCLUSION:

We found a high incidence of injuries in Rugby São José athletes, with a predominance of joint injuries at the lower limbs, the main risk factors being: age, time playing rugby, high BMI, highest weekly workout frequency and gym training habits, besides the presence of previous injuries and playing in the "in line" position.
