The world's population is under an aging process, and this demographic revolution is now affecting developing countries such as Brazil. The dramatic increase in the number of older adults observed in the last few years has had significant implications in health planning and delivery of health services, including mental health. This study reviews the current demographic profile of elderly population and its consequences for the practice of psychiatry and organization of mental health services in Brazil.
