P fertilization and seed p content effects on chemical and physiological characteristics of common bean seed

The objective of this study was to evaluate the combined effects of P content in the seeds and P rates applied to soil on chemical and the physiological characteristics of common bean seeds. All tests were performed with seeds of the Carioca Precoce and IAC Carioca Tybatã cultivars, grown during the dry season (from March to July). A randomized block design in a 3x3 factorial (nine treatments), combining three P seed contents (low, medium, and high) and three rates of P (0, 90, and 150 kg.ha-1) applied as triple superphosphate to the soil, with five replications, was used to analyze seed production and quality for each cultivar. Means were compared by the Tukey test at 5%. The following variables were evaluated: moisture content, chemical (protein, total sugars, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) contents and physiological (germination and vigor) seed characteristics. The seed physiological quality was not improved by seed P content and P fertilization in spite of some effects on nutrient contents.
