  • New records for the nematodes Ascaridia columbae (Gmelin) Travassos, Acuaria mayori Lent, Freitas & Proença and Aproctella stoddardi Cram in Brazilian birds, with redescription of the species

Pinto, R. Magalhães; Vicente, J. Júlio; Noronha, Dely; de Fábio, Sueli P.

    Resumo em Inglês:

The species Ascaridia columbae (Gmelin, 1790) Travassos, 1913, Acuaria mayori Lent, Freitas & Proença, 1945 and Aproctella stoddardi Cram, 1931, are redescribed and referred in new hosts. Acuaria mayori is reported for the first time in Brazil and Ap. stoddardi in South America. Ascaridia columbae is properly figured for the first time in Brazil.
  • Dípteros caliptrados (Muscidae e Anthomyiidae) da região metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro, RJ: II. Atratividade e freqüência sazonal

    d'Almeida, José Mario

    Resumo em Inglês:

Nine thousand, six hundred and ninety-one flies of the family Muscidae (47 species) and Anthomyiidae (2 species) were captured. Flies were collected in three ecologically distinct areas (urban, rural and forest) within the metropolitan region of the city of Rio de Janeiro using as baits decomposing fish, bovine liver, fresh human faeces and mashed banana with sugar. Fish attracted the highest number of flies all over the year. Large number of flies were always collected in the summer and spring but reduced in the winter. Among several species of flies, Atherigona orientalis Schiner, 1868, Musca domestica Linnaeus, 1758 and Synthesiomya nudiseta (Wulp, 1883) were always frequent.
  • On the taxonomy and distribution of Callinectes Stimpson (Crustacea, Decapoda, Portunidae) in Rio Grande do Norte

    Sankarankutty, C.; Freire, A.G.; Santiago, L.C.

    Resumo em Inglês:

A faunistic survey of the species of Callinectes Stimpson, 1871 carried out in the coastal and estuarine regions of the State of Rio Grande do Norte yielded five species: C. bocourti A. Milne Edwards, 1879; C. danae Smith, 1869; C. exasperatus (Gerstaecker, 1856); C. larvatus Ordway, 1863 and C. ornatus Ordway, 1863. Specimens examined consist of those collected on a monthly basis from three fixed stations within the estuary of Potengi, Natal during a period of two years and those obtained from other localities. Among the species occuring in the region, C. danae is more abundant and has a wider range of tolerance of salinity while C. larvatus is restricted to the marine habitat. Though C. danae sustains important artisan fishery, C. bocourti of large size also contribute to the fishery.

Researches under field conditions were done on the breeding cycle of Macrobrachium potiuna (Müller, 1880), a freshwater shrimp from southern Brazil. It was possible to determine the fecundity and establish its relations with the spawn's weight, the total length and the total weight of ovigerous females.
  • Levantamento da fauna entomológica no estado do Paraná: I. Introdução. Situações climática e florística de oito pontos de coleta. Dados faunísticos de agosto de 1986 a julho de 1987

    Marinoni, Renato C.; Dutra, Renato R. C.

    Resumo em Inglês:

Eight localities were selected as representative sites to survey the entomofauna of Paraná State, Brazil: 1) Antonina (Sapitanduva); 2) Sao José dos Pinhais (Serra do Mar); 3) Colombo (Embrapa); 4) Ponta Grossa (Vila Velha); 5) Telêmaco Borba (Reserva Biológica Klabin); 6) Jundiaí do Sul (Fazenda Monte Verde); 7) Guarapuava (Santa Clara) and 8) Fênix (Reserva de Vila Rica). Floristic and meteorological conditions in these sites were registered and compared. One Malaise and one light trap were installed in each site. The insects were collected during two years, from August 1986 to July 1988. Only the material obtained during the first year has been sorted at insect order level and analyzed. The quantitative faunistic data were transformed in percentages and monthly densities for the analysis. Comparisons among collecting sites were established based on the faunistic and climatic data. The following methods were used to analyze the data: Clustering Analysis, Principal Coordinate Analysis and the Linear Correlation Coefficient.

The colony of C. albiceps (Wiedemann, 1819) was established from larvae and adults colected in the "Estação para Pesquisa Parasitológica W.O. Neitz" area at UFRRJ and Seropedica District, Itaguai, Rio de Janeiro. (Latitude: 22º45'S; Longitude: 43º41'W and Altitude: 33 metres). The biological aspects of this species were studied in climatized chambers regulated at 60±10% RH and 14 hours photophase. The duration and the viability of the larval and pupal stages of C. albiceps was 5,2 and 4,53 days; 95,75% and 94%, respectively. An effect of group was observed on the larvae at the first and second instar. The average weight of mature larvae was around 75 mg, varying between 12,2 to 120 mg. Only mature larvae with average weight higher than 42 mg have originated adults. Oviposition peaks between the sixth and tenth days pos-emergence were observed. Survival curves of the males and females were estimated using the Weibull model.
