Performance of illiterate adults in evaluating phonological awareness abilities

PURPOSE: to evaluate the performance of phonological awareness in illiterate adults and compare it with the performance of literate adults. METHOD: 31 adults, of both genders, divided in two groups: literate and illiterate, submitted to Phonological Awareness Test. RESULTS: performance of illiterate adults was not satisfactory and was poorer when compared to literate adults; both groups showed poorer performance in subtests involving phonemes; just two subtests did not achieve the statistical significance between both groups. CONCLUSION: the poorer performance of illiterate adults, especially in phonemic tasks, can be due to their school level, because they do not dominate the alphabetic code.
