A history of the Centro Acadêmico Luiz Carpenter (CALC): between authoritarianism and resistance at the Universidade do Estado da Guanabara (1964-1970)

This article examines the activities of the Centro Acadêmico Luiz Carpenter (CALC), the representative body of students at the Law School of the Universidade do Estado da Guanabara (UEG)-today the Law School of the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ)-during the early years of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1970). Drawing on minutes from the Departmental Council (1963-1984), hemerographic sources (1963-1970), and reports produced by intelligence agencies (1964-1970), the study seeks to understand how CALC became a center of student resistance, even as the institution, to some extent, reproduced authoritarian practices. The research shows that CALC consolidated itself as a space of political opposition and resistance, navigating tensions between consolidating power and critiquing authoritarianism. By reconstructing this experience, the article contributes to the historiography of law schools and to contemporary debates on the formation of Brazilian legal culture under regimes of exception.
