Drugs, military urbanism and gentrification: the case of the São Paulo’s "Cracolândia”

Abstract

This study intends to understand how the war on drugs acts as a vector of gentrification in the region of Crackland in São Paulo. In this sense, the fight against crack, through strategies of military urbanism, has as its only objective the replacement of the inhabitants of the place by residents of wealthier classes, in order to transform the center of São Paulo into a place that can be defined in the parameters of a global city.
