PERSPECTIVES OF ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE AND PHYSICAL ARTIFACTS: A STUDY IN EQUESTRIAN SCHOOL THROUGH PHOTO-ELICTING

ABSTRACT

In Brazil, there are few studies focused on the organizational culture of organizations that are not part of the mainstream. This study aims to understand the organizational culture of an equestrian school in São Paulo, through the apprehension of the instrumentality, aesthetics and symbology that parents, teachers and employees ascribe to artifacts. These dimensions were related to the organizational culture perspectives of integration, differentiation and fragmentation. Photo-elicited interviews, informal observations and document analysis unveiled a culture of contrasts, where dichotomies “mix and match”, such as time vs. space, fear vs. safety, and extended family vs. equalitarian discourse. This article is expected to contribute to studies on sports organizations and socially oriented institutions, as well as to research based on multiple cultural perspectives.
