EMERGING TRAJECTORIES OF BRAZILIAN-CANADIAN STARTUPS IN LIGHT OF THE UPPSALA MODEL, IMMIGRANT ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND EFFECTUATION

ABSTRACT

The present study highlights the trajectories of 19 Brazilian entrepreneurs from startups established in Canada. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with respondents. Given that there are few studies related to Brazilian entrepreneurs in Canada, we sought to verify what would be their barriers and main difficulties, opportunities and successful strategies undertaken by them in the country. The article starts with a discussion about immigrant entrepreneurship and the creation of startups. Then, the migratory movement of Brazilians to Canada is addressed, dealing with Brazilian business in general and startups, where it also focuses on the definition of startups and their profile in Brazil, in addition to the Canadian startup ecosystem. The present article's theoretical contribution is to compare the collected data with the theories of entrepreneurship of immigrants, effectuation theory, startups and the Uppsala model, aiming at listing in a theoretical way the elements observed in the researched group. At the end of the article, a diagram is presented that illustrates the journey of the immigrant entrepreneur in the process of designing and validating his business model, and the conclusions can contribute to entrepreneurial theories, showing specific aspects of the context of Canadian startups. As practical implications, the study can provide data for possible future policies, which aim to attract more qualified and skilled Brazilian entrepreneurs to the Canadian technology ecosystem.
