ABSTRACT: Considering the specificity of this study, which tries to reveal the meaning of life to individuals that constitute an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Logotherapy by Viktor Frankl was elected as the conceptual category for the analysis of that reality. It was also important to analyse the historical and conceptual nature of the ICU, as it constitutes the fundamental field of this investigation. Interviews were carried out with 14 subjects, selected at random, within the universe that constitutes the field on focus. Data was obtained in March and April, 1998, making up 50 hours of participating observations and semistructured interviews. The environment investigated was an ICU of a school-hospital in Porto Alegre.
