Biological, psychological, social and spiritual problems brought (py mastectomy have become a concern to health field professionals, more precisely to nurses. The objective of this exploratory type research, involving 60 patients with breast cancer, took place in two oncology hospitals in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The sample was formed by three 20-patients-group. Data gathering took place through individual interviews. Results point out a lack of orientation during the pre and post-operatory periods as well as emotional problems caused by mutilation, that affect mainly clients' sexual activities. The study offers support for nursing action planning, aiming at assisting needs presented by this clientele.
