The care of hiv positive pregnant women: perceptions of nurses

The present study has as its objective to identify the perceptions of nursing professionals, who work in the field of women's health, regarding the care of HIV positive pregnant women. This is an exploratory study with a qualitative approach. The participants of the study were eight nurses who work in the obstetric clinic of Hospital de Clinicas in Porto Alegre. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, which were analyzed according to the theme content proposal of Minayo (1996). The themes identified in the interview were human care, professional practice, duality - HIV X Care and being an HIV positive women: the view of nursing. The study motivates professionals who care for HIV positive patients to reflect on strategies for a multidisciplinary and continuous care. It also emphasizes the importance of respecting individuals so that the objective can be achieved.
