The author did a bibliographic surveying about the mechanism, toxicity and types of lamps used in phototherapy. She described the nursing care that is given to newborns under phototherapy in the nursery of external newborns of the Instituto da Criança do Hospital das Gínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo.
