Abstract

OBJECTIVE

To analyze basic self-care conditioning factors and quality of life associated with health, relating them to self-care capacity among individuals in the preoperative period of coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

METHOD

Descriptive study with a quantitative approach, theoretically and methodologically anchored in the Self-care Deficit Nursing Theory. Data were collected between March and August 2013, using the Self-care Assessment Scale and the Medical Outcomes 36 Item Short Form Health Survey.

RESULTS

There was a correlation between self-care capacity and quality of life in the preoperative period of coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

CONCLUSION

Among participants of this study, a reduction in quality of life may have occurred due to the presence of noncommunicable diseases; nevertheless, individuals sought the best ways to care for themselves.
