Considering the magnitude of acute respiratory infections (ARI) in infancy and the necessity of nursery educators being prepared to offer both care and recognize signs of gravity of respiratory problems, the aim of this study is to identify skills and usage of nursery educators relative to the prevention, early detection and handling of these injuries. The study shall be undertaken along two university nurseries in the São Paulo Municipality. The project has the approval of the Committee for Ethics in Research. Data collecting shall be achieved through structured interviews of the educators and nursery-infirmary assistants. The form to be used for data collecting has a part reserved for the characterization of the subjects and another for questions on skills and usage relative to the ARIs, attitudes upon facing difficulties when caring for the child and perceptions on their functions as to the control of the ARIs within the nursery/pre-school. The interviews shall be put on tape, fully transcribed, and submitted to the contents' thematic analysis. In the instrument's pre-test, undertaken in another nursery of the same university, the need for alteration can be put in just a single question, what has already been realized. The foreseen deadline for terminating the investigation is July 2003.
