A publicidade é um dos artefatos que estão inseridos em um conjunto de instâncias culturais e como tal funciona como mecanismo de representação, ao mesmo tempo em que opera como constituidora de identidades. Muito mais do que seduzir o/a consumidor/a ou induzi-lo/a a obter determinado produto, a publicidade comporta um tipo de pedagogia e de currículo culturais. Estes, entre outras coisas, produzem valores e saberes; regulam condutas e modos de ser; re-produzem identidades e representações; constituem certas relações de poder e ensinam modos de ser mulher e de ser homem, formas de feminilidade e de masculinidade.

Advertising is one of the artifacts that are part of a set of cultural instances and, as such, it works as a mechanism of representation and operates as a mechanism for the constitution of identities. More than seducing consumers or inducing them to obtain a given product, advertising conveys a kind of cultural pedagogy and curriculum. These, among other things, produce values and knowledge, regulate behaviors and ways of being, re-produce identities and representations, constitute certain power relations and teach ways of being either a woman or a man, forms of either femininity or masculinity.

Entender as lógicas de transmissão do patrimônio familiar, particularmente no caso da terra, levando-se conta as diferenças de gênero, exige identificar os distintos papéis reservados ao homem e à mulher na dinâmica de reprodução social. A compreensão de tais lógicas distintas requer que investiguemos os diferentes signficados do patimônio territorial em cada contexto social e cultural. Embora a herança seja baseada na noção de consanguinidade, as regras costumeiras não reconhecem os mesmos direitos para todos os filhos. É precisamente sobre essas diferenças de que trataremos nesse artigo, particularmente no que se diz respeito às distintas práticas derivadas das identidades de gênero. Buscar-se-á entender a lógica das diferentes formas de transmitir a herança e sua relação com a reprodução social de famílias de agricultores familiares em duas regiões distintas: no municipio de Nova Pádua, na região de influência de Caxias do Sul, no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, e na região serrana do estado do Rio de Janeiro, município de Nova Friburgo

To understand the rules by which family estates are transmitted among farming families, particularly in the case of land and taking into account gender differences, it is necessary to identify the distinct roles reserved to men and women in the dynamics of social reproduction. The understanding of these distinct logics requires the investigation of the different meanings that the territorial patrimony itself has in each social and cultural context. Although inheritance is based on the notion of shared blood, common law rules do not recognize the same rights for all children. It is precisely these differences that we will deal with in this article, particularly in respect to those differences derived from gender identity. We will be seeking to understand the logic of different forms of transmitting inheritances and their relationship with the social reproduction of farming families in two different regions: in southern Brazil (state of Rio Grande do Sul), among descendants of Italian colonists, and in the mountainous region of the state of Rio de Janeiro, among descendants of Swiss and German colonists.

Este é um estudo sobre gênero na produção artística de peças de cerâmica em algumas comunidades de artesãos do Vale do Jequitinhonha, Minas Gerais, onde tradicionalmente apenas as mulheres chamadas "paneleiras" praticavam esse ofício, que era transmitido de mãe para filha. Naquela região, assim que a arte do barro se tornou uma fonte alternativa de renda, vários homens decidiram entrar para o ofício. A entrada de homens na arte do barro provocou reconfigurações nas relações de gênero. Um ponto muito importante a ser observado aqui é que apesar de tradicionalmente transmitida por mulheres e pela ação feminina, a arte do barro tem incorporado valores de masculinidade: ao se aproximarem de um ofício tradicionalmente feminino, os homens passaram a retirar dele recursos simbólicos de representação de masculinidade.

This is a gender study on the artistic production of ceramic in some communities of Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Traditionally only women, who were called 'potters', produced this kind of craft in that region and it used to be taught from mothers to daughters. As ceramic artifacts became an alternative source of income, men decided to produce them. The entrance of men in the craft caused some re-elaboration of gender relations in those communities, and allowed us to detect gender not as a set of fixed corporifications, but as something under constant construction. A very important point here is that, although transmitted by women and a result of feminine activity, the production of ceramic incorporated male values. When men gained access to a traditionally defined feminine activity, they were able to draw from the craft symbolic resources for the representation of masculinity.

O texto aborda a mobilidade, no mercado formal de trabalho, de trabalhadores e trabalhadoras demitidos da indústria brasileira nos anos 90, destacando a importância do enfoque sobre os diferenciais de gênero para a melhor compreensão desse fenômeno. Com base em dados produzidos pelas empresas brasileiras para o sistema de informações e cadastro geral de admitidos e demitidos do Ministério do Trabalho e Emprego, retrabalhados em forma longitudinal (base Raismigra), o texto procura verificar se as trajetórias de mobilidade variam segundo o gênero, o setor da atividade (sua mixidade e a natureza da reestruturação) e o tipo de mercado regional de trabalho (mais ou menos formalizado) onde se busca o emprego.

This article focuses on the inter-sectorial mobility of industrial workers in Brazil based on longitudinal data from the Brazilian Ministry of Labor on the number of hired and dismissed workers during the 1990s. Comparing two industries in two regional labor markets, the author argues that gender differences are important for understanding patterns of mobility in formal labor markets independent of the degree of their formality, the different patterns of women's work permeability, and the nature of their restructuring process.

Os textos sobre a globalização costumam pintar um mundo totalmente dominado pelo fluxo do capital global, que nega a grandes setores da humanidade um papel na divisão internacional do trabalho. Passando dessa análise econômica à política e à cultural, alguns teóricos concluem que todo o sentido evaporou dos contextos locais, deixando os habitantes isolados, incapazes de articular suas próprias alternativas às agendas globais. No entanto, um trabalho de campo com um movimento de mulheres rurais brasileiras em um desses lugares "estruturalmente irrelevantes" encontra uma outra face da globalização, com efeitos potencialmente positivos. Essas ativistas locais criam sentidos numa rede transnacional de relações político-culturais que traz benefícios e riscos ao movimento delas. Ali, as mulheres rurais se envolvem com uma gama de militantes feministas, de localizações diversas, em relações constituídas tanto pelo poder quanto pela solidariedade. Elas defendem sua autonomia em relação às imposições dos financiadores internacionais, negociam recursos políticos com feministas brasileiras, apropriam-se dos discursos feministas transnacionais e os transformam. Nesse processo, as mulheres rurais se utilizam de seus próprios recursos, com base exatamente no caráter local do movimento, caráter cujo desaparecimento é lamentado pelos teóricos da globalização.

Accounts of globalization often depict a world awash in faceless flows of global capital that deprive broad sectors of humanity of a role in the international division of labor. Extrapolating from this economic analysis to politics and culture, some theorists conclude that meaning has evaporated from local sites, leaving their isolated inhabitants unable to articulate their own alternatives to global agendas. However, fieldwork with a rural Brazilian women's movement in one of these 'structurally irrelevant' places, finds another face of globalization with more potentially positive effects. These local activists create meaning in a transnational web of political/cultural relations that brings benefits as well as risks for their movement. Rural women engage with a variety of differently located feminist actors in relations constituted both by power and by solidarity. They defend their autonomy from the impositions of international funders, negotiate over political resources with urban Brazilian feminists, and appropriate and transform transnational feminist discourses. In this process, the rural women draw on resources of their own, based on the very local-ness whose demise is bemoaned by globalization theorists.

Desde o final do século XIX, quando Darwin publicou suas obras sobre evolução, muitas cientistas têm reagido adotando basicamente duas perspectivas: enquanto algumas negam o potencial das ciências biológicas para explicar arranjos sociais, outras reinterpretam estudos da Biologia sobre diferenças sexuais, admitindo que estes podem explicar comportamentos humanos e desigualdades sociais. Procurando entender de que maneira as diferenças sociais são atribuídas ao corpo humano, o presente trabalho discute vertentes teóricas da recente produção das ciências biológicas e das sociais que buscam afirmar ou negar a plausibilidade de teorias que invocam diferenças sexuais presumidamente localizadas no corpo (cérebro, genes e fisiologias masculina e feminina) para explicar possíveis variações das habilidades, capacidades, padrões cognitivos e sexualidade humanos. Registra ainda a repercussão de perspectivas essencialistas na agenda da mídia nacional e internacional.

Since the end of the nineteenth century, when Darwin published his work on evolution, several female scientists have reacted by adopting basically two points of view: while some deny the potential of the biological sciences to explain social arrangements, others reinterpret biology studies on sex differences, admitting that these may explain human behavior and social inequality. In an attempt to appraise how social differences are assigned to the human body, this article discusses theoretical trends in recent works of biological sciences, which try to either reaffirm or deny the plausibility of theories that resort to sex differences presumably located in the body (brains, genes, male and female physiology) to explain variations in human beings' skills, abilities, cognitive patterns, and sexuality. And, given the influence of the media on our views on male and female, it also discusses the repercussion of such essentialist views on national and international print media.

Situando a temática do acesso ao poder como uma prioridade para a atual gestão do CNDM, a exposição traz um rápido diagnóstico da participação das mulheres no Executivo e no Judiciário e cita estratégias, ações e compromissos que o Conselho tem assumido, nas últimas gestões, com o fito de contribuir para o aumento da presenças das mulheres nos espaços de poder.

Based on the IBAM (Brazilian Institute of Municipal Administration) experience in the training of female leadership and using the Campaign "Women Unafraid of Power" (Mulheres sem medo do poder) carried out during the 1996 elections as our example, this paper reflects on the new meanings that the field of politics takes on when women enter it, and discusses the possible specificities of the way women exercise political power.

Tendo como pano de fundo o avanço na liderança das mulheres na América Latina, marcado pelo aumento do número de mulheres em cargos eletivos, pela adoção da política de cotas em muitos países e pelo crescimento do tema da igualdade entre mulheres e homens nos programas políticos, analisa-se a variação dos efeitos das políticas de cotas. Entre os fatores determinantes para os resultados destas políticas estão: a natureza do sistema eleitoral, com base em listas abertas ou listas fechadas; a existência ou não da norma de obrigatoriedade de posição competitiva das mulheres na lista partidária; e, finalmente, o compromisso partidário, no qual as políticas de cotas estão inseridas.

This article discusses the varying effects of quota systems, as they emerge from a scenario of women's increased inroads into politics in Latin America, expressed in the increased number of women in elected offices, the implementation of quota systems and increased presence of the issue of gender equality in political agendas. The character of the electoral system, as based on "open" or "closed" lists; the absence or presence of a norm of a compulsory competitive position for women within political parties and political parties' commitment to quota policies are the crucial factors that determine variation.

A partir de um balanço sobre as eleições de 1996, 1998 e 2000, o artigo analisa o impacto das cotas sobre os resultados eleitorais, concluindo pela pequena eficácia dessa iniciativa sobre o acesso das mulheres ao legislativo brasileiro. Procura, então, identificar alguns fatores explicativos para esse processo, vinculados ao contexto e ao sistema político e eleitoral. Ao mesmo tempo, tece considerações críticas sobre as avaliações que procuram explicar tais resultados a partir da "resistência partidária masculina", concebida de modo genérico. Por fim, discute a importância de uma análise multicausal para a compreensão da participação política das mulheres.

Taking stock of the 1996, 1998 and 2000 election campaigns, this article analyzes the impact of quota policies on electoral outcomes, coming to the conclusion that this initiative has had limited effectiveness in promoting women's access to the Brazilian legislature. From there, I seek to identify some of the factors that could explain this process, as linked to the context and to the political and electoral system. At the same time, I develop some critical considerations regarding the evaluation of these outcomes as the results of male resistance within parties, conceived of in a generic sense. Lastly, I discuss the importance of multi-causal analysis for the understanding of women's political participation

O artigo discute diferentes estratégias de justificação da adoção de quotas eleitorais por sexo, com ênfase naquelas que reivindicam um estatuto moral diferenciado para as mulheres. Elas introduziriam um novo tipo de política, mais desinteressado e altruísta, reflexo do seu treinamento social como responsáveis pelo cuidado com os mais fracos (a começar pelas crianças). No entanto, essa "política do desvelo" ou "política maternal" termina por perpetuar a inserção subordinada das mulheres no mundo da política, na medida em que o cartão de ingresso é exatamente a negação da ação em defesa dos próprios interesses.

This article discusses different strategies for justifying the adoption of sex-based electoral quotas, emphasizing the type that claim a different moral status for women. The latter advocate introduction of a new type of politics, more unselfish and altruistic, which is supposed to reflect women's social training as those who are responsible for the care of those who are weaker (beginning with children). However, this "politics of care" or "maternal politics" ends up perpetuating the subordinate position of women in the world of politics, to the extent that the very grounds for their admission-their "entrance ticket", as it were-represents the negation of action in defense of women's own interests.

A crescente preocupação com o tema da exclusão política desafia o entendimento tradicional sobre os mecanismos representativos, em especial a percepção arraigada de que a chave da boa representação política está no programa e nas idéias compartilhadas entre representantes e representadas/os - sem qualquer referência à identidade das/os representantes. Contra isso, cada vez mais é afirmada a necessidade de presença física dos grupos excluídos nos locais de decisão, o que se traduz freqüentemente na adoção de cotas eleitorais. Mas não se trata de escolher uma ou outra forma de representação e sim de, compreendendo os limites de cada uma, buscar um sistema mais justo que incorpore tanto idéias quanto presença.

Recent concern over the issue of political exclusion challenges traditional understanding of mechanisms of representation, specifically with regard to the conviction that the key to good political representation lies in the ideas and program shared by those who represent others and those who are represented -- with no reference as to the identity of those who represent. On the other hand, there is a growing claim for the physical presence of excluded groups in the locales where decisions are made which has frequently led to the adoption of electoral quotas. Nonetheless, more than just a matter of choosing one form of representation over another, we should understand the limitations of each, seeking a more just system that incorporates both presence and ideas.

Os temas propostos neste trabalho - cidadania e gênero - levam-nos a buscar referenciais de análise suficientemente abrangentes para que possamos dar conta da sua articulação. A idéia de cidadania e a construção de identidade de gênero têm sido definidas como um entendimento da sociedade que parte da definição de esferas dicotômicas, o público e o privado, responsáveis por uma desqualificação das mulheres no âmbito do político. O feminismo contemporâneo discute esta visão, criticando-a, e propõe novas abordagens que permitem integrar homens e mulheres nas suas relações, no desenvolvimento dos processos sociais.

The themes proposed in this paper -- gender and citizenship -- lead us to seek analytical references wide enough to be able to think about how they are articulated. Concepts of citizenship and the construction of gender identity have been defined through an understanding of society based on the dichotomy of the private and public as responsible for disqualifying women from the public. Contemporary feminism discusses this viewpoint, criticizing it and proposing new approaches that permit the integration of men and women through their relationships in the development of social processes.
