The aim of this study was to compare the self-esteem with self-rated health and sociodemographic characteristics of elderly practicing physical exercise, according to gender. The sample consisted of 165 elderly practitioners of exercise with a mean age of 69,14 years (SD = 6,04). The self-esteem was assessed by applying the Rosenberg scale, perception of health and sociodemographic characteristics through questions structured. We used descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests, p<0,05. The elderly have high self-esteem. We observed significant differences in self-esteem and health perception among elderly women and in the age range in elderly men. We conclude that older women who perceived their health status as positive and men aged over 70 years, practicing physical exercise, had higher self-esteem.
