Physical activity and associated factors to metabolic syndrome prevalence in adolescents

The objective of this study was to investigate the factors associated with metabolic syndrome (MS) prevalence in adolescents. The study included 391 schoolchildren between 10 to 18 years old. The physical activity was measured by accelerometer. The questionnaire developed by Chiara and Sichieri was used to assess food consumption. Metabolic syndrome was classified in accordance with the criteria proposed by the NCEP-ATP III. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in 3.4% of the sample, with a higher prevalence of MS in obese subjects (29.6%). After adjusting for the age, sex and food consumption, the adolescents that perform <30 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity showed a twice the chance of the MS, however, this association was not statistically significant (p> 0.05). Despite the trend of higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome in inactive adolescents, this was not statistically significant.
