Pedagogical knowledge for surfing instruction

The aim of the study was to assess the perception of instructors regarding the pedagogical knowledge employed when teaching surfing. We conducted a multiple case study of 11 instructors with recognized competence in youth training. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the content analysis technique. It was found that the instructors value personal practice experience in surfing and knowledge of the technical fundamentals of this sport for pedagogical intervention. Knowledge about the practice environment, equipment, planning, instruction, and the students themselves, are also important knowledge items for teaching. The perception of the pedagogical knowledge given by instructors is supported in the literature, making it useful for professional improvement and development of training programs for instructors of young surfers.
