Level of physical inactivity in different domains and associated factors in adults: Health Survey in Campinas city (ISACamp 2008/2009), São Paulo state, Brazil

OBJECTIVE:

to estimate physical inactivity (PI) prevalence in all domains in adults (18-59 years) according to demographic and socioeconomic factors, health behaviors and health status.

METHODS:

cross-sectional population-based study with two-stage cluster sampling conducted in Campinas, 2008/2009; PI was analyzed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire.

RESULTS:

overall PI prevalence was 16.3%. By domain it was 65.9% at work, 68.2% at home, 41.5% when commuting and 65.8% during leisure. At work PI was higher in women, people with more schooling, computer owners, longer sleeping time and CMD. At home PI was higher in those with more schooling and income and the unmarried. In the commuting domain PI increased with age, more schooling and computer owners. During leisure it was higher among women.

CONCLUSION:

PI was associated differently with sociodemographic, behavioral and health status factors, according to the different domains.
