Health condition of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus registered with the Family Health Strategy in Ijuí/Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, 2010-2013

OBJECTIVE:

to describe health condition of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) aged <75 years, registered with the Family Health Strategy in the urban area of Ijuí/RS, 2010-2013.

METHODS:

a descriptive case series study with 219 patients. Sociodemographic characteristics, health status, lifestyle and eating habits, complications possibly associated with T2DM, anthropometry, functional capacity, quality of life and biochemical tests were analyzed.

RESULTS:

mean age was 61.4 years. 64.8% were women. Hypertension (74.9%) was the most prevalent comorbidity and visual impairment (63,1%) was the most prevalent diabetes complication. Antidiabetic and antihypertensive drugs (69.9%) were the most frequently prescribed. Functional capacity and quality of life were adequate, except expiratory strength. Triglycerides were elevated in men (36.5%) and women (56.8%) and 40.0% of women had high glucose.

CONCLUSION:

there was a high prevalence of diabetes-associated comorbidities and complications.
