PATRIOTISM OF FRIAR BARTOLOMEU DOS MÁRTIRES? THE ARCHBISHOP OF BRAGA IN THE 1580 PORTUGUESE SUCCESSION CRISIS BETWEEN HISTORY AND MEMORY

Abstract

The archbishop of Braga, d. friar Bartolomeu dos Mártires, one of the most important clerics of the Realm, was a significant character in the diplomatic strategy to the inclusion of Portugal in the Spanish monarchy. His support for Philipp II was widely debated for centuries, first through the catholic and hagiographical optics of the tridentine episcopal archetype, and after through the optics of Portuguese nationalism, which accused him of lack of patriotism and treason. A controversial matter in his biography, especially considering the Order of the Preachers’ appeal to canonize him, the archbishop’s option to join the Habsburg should consider other factors.
