SLAVERY, CITIZENSHIP, MILITARY RECRUITMENT AND FREEDOM: BRAZILIANS IN THE EASTERN STATE OF URUGUAY (1838-1864)

Abstract

During the 1840s and 1860s the relationship between the Empire of Brazil and the Oriental Republic of Uruguay was permeated by the presence of Brazilian cattle ranchers in the north of this country, more precisely, by the reproduction of a certain productive model implanted by these mans. During the Great War, civil conflict that opposed Colorados and Blancos and there were two declarations of abolition of the slavery: 1842, the one of the colorados, that affected to those who were in Montevideo; in 1846, that of the blancos, reaching in full all those who had captives in the campaign, and among them the Brazilians to the north. The objective is to demonstrate that much more than titles, to perceive oneself as an Eastern citizen or as a subject of the Empire, was to find shelter to their aspirations for freedom or slave ownership.
