Art system and gender: portraits of artists by Hildegard Rosenthal and Alice Brill

ABSTRACT

The rise of totalitarian regimes in Europe during 1930s has brought about a great flow of immigrants to the Americas. In this context the young Hildegard Rosenthal and Alice Brill came to Brazil from Germany to work professionally in photography in the 1940s and 1950s, respectively. The post-war industrial and urban growth of the country expanded the field of arts, resulting in the emergence of the first museums of modern art, the São Paulo Biennial and the increase in the number of commercial galleries. Such changes were recorded by Rosenthal and Brill, who photographed artists, reproduced works and documented exhibitions. This essay proposes to analyze portraits of artists produced by Rosenthal and Brill, reflecting on the role of photography in representing the feminine identity in transformation in Brazilian society post-war.
