The nymphs of the seas here: the pagan nymph and her exile in the tropics

ABSTRACT

The motto of this article is the so-called nymphs in Brazilian art of the 19th century. To fulfill this purpose, it departs from the theoretical premises of two art historians, Aby Warburg and Georges Didi-Huberman. Four formerly literary characters were then approached who were transformed into pictorial characters by the brushes of renowned Brazilian artists, namely: Lindoia, Moema, Iracema and Marabá. On the canvases of José Maria de Medeiros, Victor Meirelles, Antônio Parreiras and Rodolfo Amoedo, we seek to find the pagan nymph in her exile in the tropics.
