Readings of the Dante Milano’s poetry: Sérgio Milliet and Sérgio Buarque de Holanda

ABSTRACT

Poesias, published for the first time in 1948, positions Dante Milano (1899-1991) in the group of great Brazilian poets. The first critical reception of the Milano’s work was published in the periodicals; it is a set of short texts, published between the 1940s and 1950s, in newspapers and magazines, and not infrequently in the form of a review. In this study, I am interested in examining Sérgio Milliet’s text “Hermetism and modern poetry” (“O hermetismo e a poesia moderna”) and Sérgio Buarque de Holanda’s text “Lean sea” (“Mar enxuto”), which belong to the first critical reception of Poesias. These assessments allow (re) thinking about the constitution of Milano’s poetry, pondering the permanence or obliteration of critical arguments in relation to it and evaluating the historicity of the critical discourses about this poetry.
