The symphonic silence of the forest. Geophony, biophony and anthropophony in Ferreira de Castro’s A selva

ABSTRACT

A selva (1930), by Ferreira de Castro, is a novel based on a deep knowledge of the forest that, on the narrative level, translates into an unprecedented bet on the activity of listening. Drawing upon suggestions developed within the scope of Sound studies, this essay reflects on the soundscape in A selva, highlighting the interaction between sounds of biological origin (biophony and anthropophony) and non-biological (geophony), in the conviction that to understand the forest, it is necessary first of all to know how to listen and interpret its sounds and silences.
