Migratory Plans in Cracolândia of São Paulo in the 1990s

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present the theme of migration at Cracolândia in the city of São Paulo. This is the name of a downtown region with a high concentration of crack addicts. The study is based on quantitative data, a comparison of trajectories and uses the social history and oral history methodologies. The study began with the question: was the situation of social vulnerability and frustration with the immigration plan of migrants in Cracolândia brought about by narcotic dependence or is it the result of circumstances they encountered in the city of São Paulo? The study found that chemical dependence is only one of various factors, and cannot be held solely responsible for the frustration of migratory plans. The issues presented in this study are audacious, however, they do not aim to fully explain the life trajectories of the people interviewed in Cracolândia, which would go against the countless dynamics existing in the flow.
