The main objective of this article is to describe and analyze the contributions of the psychiatrist Hermelino Lopes Rodrigues (1899-1971) in appropriating the concept of schizophrenia in Brazil in the early decades of the 20th century. His thinking was clearly influenced by the Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler (1857-1939) regarding the transition from the concept of dementia praecox to that of schizophrenia. The article also seeks to highlight the unprecedented reading that Lopes Rodrigues made of Bleuler's texts and highlights the influence of biographical and psychological aspects in schizophrenic patients.
