Adolescence and ambivalence: the “hook up” as un existencial “non place”

Resumos

This paper is a theoretical reflection on the “hook up” (“ficar” in Portuguese) phenomenon practiced by Brazilian adolescents. It is based on some clinical fragments and vignettes to discuss a discursive form that reflects an unstable mode of libidinal investment that presents itself as a “new form of relationship”. Using psychoanalysis as a reference, this study defines “hook up” primarily as a logical time which essential feature is a connection between the social imaginary and the symbolic order, which leads to a reduction of the desire in the former one, constituting both a discursive and an existential “non-place” at the same time.

Key words:
Psychoanalytic clinic; adolescents; “hook up”; desire
