Gurney's article presented here is important for having redirected the study of hallucinations away from the narrow medical context that had been set down by Esquirol, Baillarger and Michéa (Berrios, 1996). The untimely death of Gurney, a man of rare talent from Cambridge deprived British epistemology of one of its most important thinkers.
