This article discusses diagnostic criteria in psychiatry and psychoanalysis based on a case study of a patient assisted by a multi-professional team at IPUB/UFRJ and followed up by professionals in Clinical Research in Psychoanalysis of the Post-graduate Program at IPUB. A comparative study is presented between the material from the psychiatric anamnesis of the patient and from psychoanalytic interviews in order to demonstrate the modus operandi of psychoanalysis, the main objective of which is to help the subject emerge through speech. This fact brings up important consequences in the handling of treatment.
