Occurrence of rusts on Handroanthus impetiginosus and Handroanthus vellosoi in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul

Abstract

Rust is the most important disease that occurs in ipe trees, which is caused by fungi genera Prospodium, Order Pucciniales. The objective of this study was to contribute to the knowledge of species of fungi that cause ipês rust presenting spore identification and morphological description of two species of the genera Prospodium collected in Aquidauana-MS. Samples of plants with symptoms were collected at State University of Mato Grosso Do Sul in Aquidauana-MS, University Unit of Aquidauana, in region of the Cerrado-Pantanal ecotone. Spores of Prospodium bicolor and P. tecomicola were collected directly from leaves with symptoms of their respective hosts Handroanthus impetiginosus and H. vellosoi, and evaluated according to their spore states. Both species of fungi that caused rust presented mesospores, described for the first time on theses species. This work represents the first record of the occurrence of these rust in the host species of H. impetiginosus and H. vellosi in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.
