Asteraceae from EPDA-Galheiro, Perdizes, Minas Gerais, Brazil

ABSTRACT

The Asteraceae is one of the largest families of Angiosperms, with approximately 1600 genera and 25000 species. In Minas Gerais State there are few studies of the whole family, such as the surveys of the Serra do Cipó, Serra da Canastra and Grão-Mogol. The objective of this study is to present an account of the species of Asteraceae in Estação de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Ambiental-Galheiro, Perdizes, MG. The survey was carried out between May 2002 and April 2004. The taxonomic treatment provides a identification key and descriptions of each species, followed by comments on their distribution, habitat and diagnostic characteristics. Eupatorium and Vernonia were treated using the traditional classification, once the current proposals still need further development particularly concerning the Brazilian taxa. A total of 107 species were collected belonging to 34 genera. The most representative genera were Vernonia (24 spp.), Eupatorium (19 spp.), Mikania (10 spp.) and Baccharis (8 spp.). The species found within the studied area are mainly representatives from open, savana-like vegetation, resulting in an overlap of approx. 75% (81 out of 107 species) with a compiled list for the Cerrado flora.
