A new Lauraceae species from Cloud forests of Serra da Mantiqueira, Pindamonhangaba, SP, Brazil

Abstract

New species of Lauraceae is described for the southeast region of Brazil, state of São Paulo, the city of Pindamonhangaba. Ocotea mantiqueirae is part of the complex "Ocotea floribunda" of Rohwer (1986)Rohwer, J.G. 1986. Prodromus einer Monographie der Gattung Ocotea Aubl. (Lauraceae), sensu latoMitteilungen aus dem Institut für Allgemeine Botanik 20: 1-278., but differs in details not described in pistillate species of this complex, especially gynoecium and glabrous ovary; abscission of the portion of receptacle, the whole extent of the tepals and whorls of staminodes after fertilization; cupule simple and thickened margin without remnants of tepals, characteristically rib-laminated throughout its length for long lenticels; globular fruit of much larger dimensions. At this moment the species is endemic and restricted to the cloud forests of the Serra da Mantiqueira in state of São Paulo.
