AN IN VITRO STUDY OF SURFACE ROUGHNESS AND PROXIMAL PROFILE OF AMALGAM CONDENSED AGAINST REUTILIZED STAINLESS STEEL MATRIX BANDS

The aim of this in vitro research was to evaluate both surface roughness and proximal profile of amalgam condensed against reutilized stainless steel matrix bands. Surface roughness and proximal profile of amalgam obtained from 3 brands of alloys were studied and submitted to statistical analysis. It is important to note that the same matrix band was used to perform 15 amalgam restorations. Roughness increased constantly from the first to the last sample and the profile projector demonstrated a constant deformation of the matrix band printed on the amalgam proximal surface. Results demonstrate that matrix bands should therefore be regarded as disposable items
