Editors, Rev Psiquiatr RS, 2008-2009 management

This is the first issue of the management team in charge of Revista de Psiquiatria do Rio Grande do Sul for the next 2 years.

Since the journal has been launched, each management team was able to implement their form of managing the publication using creative skills. However, we believe that it was exactly the mixture of experiences obtained from continuing the work from one management to the other and the renewal brought by change of the teams that accounted for a major development of our journal. We will not be an exception.

We are aware of the exponential growth of Rev Psiquiatr RS. Over the past three managements, the number of articles has increased by 269%. In addition, the journal remains Qualis A according to the criteria of the Coordination and Improvement of Higher Level Personnel (CAPES), maintains its bilingual edition in Portuguese and English at SciELO, has adapted its rate of article rejection to about 60%, widened and changed its local, national and international editorial boards, as well as defined its editorial line as giving priority to original articles. Furthermore, following the most modern standards among scientific journals, it has acquired and implemented a fully computerized system of article submission and review, accessible via the Internet, which has increased and greatly facilitated the access for authors willing to publish, as well as dramatically reduced the time between article submission and publication. All this will undoubtedly be maintained.

The current management of Rev Psiquiatr RS, however, needs to deal with the consequences of such growth, especially regarding its adaptation to the economic reality.

Managing and publishing a bilingual scientific journal in our country is something extremely expensive. Fours years ago, due to a wise decision made by Sociedade de Psiquiatria do Rio Grande do Sul (SPRS), Rev Psiquiatr RS started to be sent without any cost to all members of the Brazilian Psychiatric Association (Associação Brasileira de Psiquiatria - ABP), in addition to the issues previously sent to SPRS members.

The objective at that time was to make our journal known nationwide, widening the universe of authors and, therefore, attracting new and better articles. The aforementioned data confirm the accuracy of that attitude. However, 5 years later, with novelties in the editorial area (such as the acceptance of electronic publications by the international scientific community), Rev Psiquiatr RS decides to follow the path of this new editorial trend. Thus, from the next issue on, our journal will be once again sent to SPRS members only, maintaining a tradition of 29 uninterrupted years. Electronic format will have free and universal access, including the whole content of the journal in Portuguese and in English.

Rev Psiquiatr RS, freely distributed to nearly 5,000 Brazilian psychiatrists in its print version, has reached a level of scientific quality and national acknowledgment never seen before. It is now time to adapt it to our financial reality, to end a cycle and start a new one.

SPRS, through its past boards, invested heavily to promote our journal's growth. We are glad to think that, as in the human life cycle, in this new stage Rev Psiquiatr RS will be able to follow its paths without the need for intense and continuous financial support from the institution to which it belongs. The offspring of SPRS can now walk on its own: it has grown well, strong and respected. Its proud parents claim it will know how to take care of itself.

Therefore, on the one hand, based on previous experience of continuity, we are still inspired by all the successes of the management teams that preceded us. On the other hand, we contribute with our decision to add an entirely electronic version to the printed publication.

This is the beginning of our management. A new stage with new challenges.

Along with our colleagues in the Editorial Board, we hope to overcome these challenges and contribute to our journal throughout the following 2 years.
