Religious transit and institutional regulation: a case study in the Foursquare Gospel Church in Belo Horizonte

Abstract: Before the autonomization of religious experiences, the transit of persons and symbols in the evangelical circuit and the loss of ecclesial legitimacy in regulating the individual trajectories, this case study in the Foursquare Gospel Church in Belo Horizonte proposes to investigate the institutional regulation mechanisms directed to stable and episodic adherents. Thus, the first section of this article addresses the foundational period of the temple and the reflections of personal evangelism methods in formation of a nucleus of converts. Already the second section focuses on the cathedralization process and mass evangelism strategies, media investments and prayer chains, aimed to floating clientele. Finally, it concludes with some notes on the reconfigurations of the ties of belonging in contemporary Pentecostalism.
