"Trabalho", "mudança de vida" e "prosperidade" entre fiéis da Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus

Since the 1990s the concepts of "productivity" and "results" have taken center-stage on Brazil's economic discourse. Throughout this period the number of Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus, defender of the Theology of Prosperity, faithful has skyrocketed among the poor. This church promises a worldly existence of "abundance" and "prosperity" to those paying the "tithe" and demanding from the Lord a "structure to work and to fight for life". Using ethnographic material culled from Neopentecostal faithful, this paper establishes the connection between both processes.
